Camtasia and PowerPoint
Tips and Pointers
Goal: the 10 minute mini-lecture
PowerPoint is the most overused teaching tool today!
Let’s first discuss distance learning pedagogy. Instructors don’t need to cover the entire lesson orally. Use a variety of media to teach the lesson
- Use readings (book chapters, articles, and websites) as the primary method of content delivery for the lesson
- Use graded worksheets to support readings
- Use quizzes to reinforce learning
- Its better to have a variety of small assignments rather than one major assignment
- Once teaching methods (pedagogy) are in line with effective distance learning strategies then design the PowerPoint presentations
Create PowerPoint presentation text and slides
Keep each PPT presentation short, around 15 slides
Use simple screen design templates (white background, black letters, and simple fonts)
Less is more: less words, graphics, color, animations
Make sure text on PPT matches your talk (students get confused when your narrative does not match what is on the slides)
Use a high quality microphone (3.5mm jack conference-mic model CM909S, cost $60.00)
Speak slowly, clearly, directly
Use humor and warn talk to create a connection between you and your students
Use the mini-lectures to tell them special things that are not in the readings from your experience and wisdom
Wrap up PowerPoint by being directive - my last slide is always titled: What should I do now? Followed by directions
For example:
-
What should I do next?
